Zanzibar Travel Tips, East Coast, Tanzania.

Please consider the following when planning a visit:

•    Entry Requirements: All visitors are required to have a valid passport and visa.  Visas can be obtained from the Tanzanian diplomatic missions or alternatively at the point of entry. The cost of a visa varies, depending on the type, duration and nationality of the applicant.  Please check in advance to avoid inconvenience.
•    Health and Safety: A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate may be demanded of visitors on arrival.  Exemptions are made for travellers from non-endemic areas such as Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand and some parts of the Middle East.  Travellers who intend to visit Zanzibar after travelling through endemic areas are strongly advised to obtain a yellow fever vaccination at least two weeks before departure from their home countries.  Malaria is common in Zanzibar and it is advisable to take precautions. In particular, use mosquito repellent and wear long sleeved shirts and long trousers in the evenings. Prevention is better than cure.
•    Behaviour: Please observe the following rules: Swimsuits and skimpy dresses should be restricted to hotels and resort premises.  Drinking alcohol in public may offend residents. Nudity on the beach is unacceptable. Displays of affection in public are not customary in Zanzibar.  Taking photographs of residents without first asking their permission is considered offensive.  Military and security-sensitive areas should not be photographed.
•    Currency and Exchange: The unit if currency is the Tanzanian shilling. Notes are in 200, 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000 shillings.  Coins are in units of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 shillings.  Money can only be exchanged at banks, bureaux and other specified areas.  The exchange rate varies from time to time.  The exchange rate in December 1999 was 800 shillings per $US.  Few areas accept credit cards and traveller's cheques.
•    Customs and Excise: The following items are exempt from tax – 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars, one litre of wine or spirit, 250 ml of perfume.  Some of the curios or handicrafts purchased in Zanzibar as souvenirs can be taxed. Please keep all receipts.
•    An airport tax of US$20.00 per ticket is payable on departure.  Keep small denominations ready. A tax of US$5.00 is payable on every ticket when travelling by sea. A 15% hotel levy for every used bed.  Please check with the hotel to see whether this has been included.  Local authorities may impose other taxes in their respective areas. BBZantra
