Ban on 4x4 Beach Driving, South Africa.
In addition to plastic bags and liquor bottles, Valli Moosa, the former Minister of Environmental Affairs has his sights on 4x4 cowboys who grind up and down our beaches. Aside from being an eyesore, beaches are not simply empty spaces. Between the grains of sand live insects and crustaceans that contribute to the food chain. They recycle huge quantities of nutrients that the sea delivers onto the sand. Whether close to the surface or deep down, compression of the sand spells death.
In addition, I have noticed an increase in the number of black oystercatchers on our beaches recently. Perhaps this is because their nests, which are located close to the high water mark, are no longer being destroyed.
I applaud the Minister’s initiative in this regard. AABanon
