South Africa’s Real Wealth is Biodiversity, South Africa.

South Africa has over 800 species of birds (more than North America), more than 300 species of mammals, 850 grass species, 99 species of frogs and toads; over 18000 kinds of flowering plants and ferns (9500 in the Cape Floral Region), 288 reptile species; over 720 tree species, about 50000 recorded insect species and about 6000 different types of spiders. To help safeguard this incredible wealth the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism will be introducing what it calls a “Biodiversity Clearing House Mechanism".  The project, funded by the Global Environmental Facility, will be a one-stop information shop on everything concerning South Africa’s biodiversity and its protection.  The BCHM will be available electronically and in hard copy.  World Environment Day falls on June 5 and this year’s theme is, in a way, a challenge: “2000 – The Environmental Millennium: Time to Act”.  What will you do to tread more lightly on the earth this year?
