With the exception of lion, all of the Big5 occur in the reserve. About 25% is open bushveld. Much of the remaining area consists of steep valleys with dense vegetation. Three veld types are present: lowveld, tall grassveld and mountain sourveld. Other habitats such as cliff faces, rivers and streams, granite boulder outcrops and deep narrow valleys provide places for a variety of plants and animals, including over 20 species of indigenous fish, 80 mammal species, 320 bird species and close to 100 species of amphibia and reptiles.  Rare and endangered species include the greater bushbaby (nagaapie), leopard, honey badger, brown hyena (hyaena), pangolin, tsessebe, goliath heron, bald ibis, bathawk, martial eagle, brown-necked parrot and Cape eagle owl.

o Bush Camps: Three rustic bush camps are available for hire.  Thalu accommodates four in a two-bed reed and thatch unit.  Mbizo accommodates eight in two separate four-bed units. Mhlangeni houses ten in five two-bed units.  Fully equipped but visitors need to bring their own food, beverages and torches (flashlights). Game guard available for walks: contact the Officer-in-Charge +27 (388) 75239.
o Ntshondwe Camp:  At the foot of the Ntshondwe Cliffs with a spectacular view of the reserve. Easy access to a waterhole in front of the camp. Self-guided walks and a hide for bird watching and game viewing. Accommodation for 200 in 39 self-catering thatched chalets, with two, four or six beds, fully equipped with linen, crockery, cutlery, stove, fridge and utensils.  Six-bed luxury lodge with its own swimming pool. Cook in attendance. Some units are designed to accommodate the handicapped. A la carte restaurant and takeway services.  Conference Centre accommodates 56 delegates in 28 2-bed non-self catering chalets.  Curio shop stocks basic foodstuffs. Swimming pool and bar.
o Camping: Small rustic campground 17-km from Ntshondwe, with basic amenities such as cold water ablutions and flush toilets.

Camps are either not fenced or do not have totally game-proof fences.  Please bear in mind that wild animals are unpredictable and potentially dangerous.   Do not walk beyond the vicinity of your chalet or campsite after sunset unless it is essential to do so, and not before you have checked to see that there are no dangerous animals visible with a bright flashlight.
