Golden Gate National Park, Clarens, Drakensberg, Eastern Free State.

In the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the north-eastern Free State. It derives its name from the brilliant shades of gold cast by the setting sun on the sandstone cliffs, especially Brandwag Rock. 11600-Ha of highland habitat is home to a variety of mammals such as black wildebeest, eland, blesbok, oribi, springbok and Burchell’s zebra. Bird species include the rare bearded vulture (lammergeyer) and bald ibis, which breed on ledges of the sandstone cliffs. Cool highveld summers with thunderstorms in the afternoons and cold winters with occasional snow transforming the park into a white wonderland.

Brandwag Restcamp.

•    Hotel rooms with two single beds, one or two double beds, bathroom (shower or bath), telephone and TV
•    Bridal suite with bedroom, bathroom, lounge and bar with a small refrigerator.
•    Cottages and chalets have an equipped kitchenette, stove, refrigerator, TV, carport and barbecue facilities.

Glen Reenen Restcamp

Bungalows with either one double or tow single beds or two single and one stack bed, bathroom (shower) and kitchen with basic equipment

Wilgehof Hostel

Maximum of 80 people in four dormitories – ideal for youth groups.


•    Caravan and camping sites in beautiful shaded grounds at Glen Reenen
•    Ablution and barbecue facilities and scullery
•    Electrical outlets in the ablution block and some of the camp site
•    Maximum of 6 persons per site

Picnic site for day visitors has ablution and barbecue facilities. Glen Reenen General Dealer. Brandwag Curio shop, licensed restaurant, coffee shop, ladies bar and laundromat.  Catering for conferences and weddings at Brandwag.

Adventure and Outdoor Activities

•    Rhebok Hiking Trail (two days and 1 night), maximum of 18 persons per group. Hikers provide al of their own necessities.  Booking essential.
•    Short nature trails, varying from one through 5 hours. No bookings required.
•    Game viewing at leisure in own vehicle
•    Guided excursions, night drives, video shows and lectures during holiday periods. Enquire at reception.
•    Van Reenen family graveyard
•    Brandwag buttress rock formation
•    Bird hide on Langtoon Dam
•    Lookout points at Zuluhoek, Generaalskop, Oribi Basin and Drakensberg View.
•    Environmental education courses
•    Bowls, tennis, table tennis and snooker
•    Horse riding in peak periods.

No pets. Vehicle repairs, medical, post office and police services are available in Clarens or Bethlehem.

Travel southwest on the R712 to Clarens via Phuthatijaba from Harrismith, which is at the intersection of the N3 with the N5. Alternatively travel south on the R712 from Bethlehem on the N5 to Clarens and then travel east to the park, which is between Clarens and Witsieshoek (Phuthatijaba). ADGolden
