Mpofu Game Reserve, Fort Beaufort, Eastern Cape.

7500-Ha reserve in the Katberg Mountains. Rich diversity of game and habitat. Dense forests, rivers and rock pools. Farm-style accommodation. Steep terrain and varied rainfall supports a surprising variety of plant and animal species. Forests with ancient yellowwood trees, valley bushveld and open grasslands – a hikers dream. Game includes Burchell’s zebra, bushbuck, eland, giraffe, white rhino, springbok and Cape buffalo. Established on land owned by 1820 settlers. Their classic homes have been converted into lodges.  The reserve is close to Chief Maqoma’s Kraal, the exact location of which is a closely guarded secret. Features include:

Fort Beaufort is on the R67 north of Grahamstown, which is on the N2 east of Port Elizabeth, which is close to the intersection of the N2 with the N10.  Travel north on the R67 from Grahamstown towards Fort Beaufort.  Mpofu is on the left.
