Namaqua National Park and Skilpad Flower Reserve, Kamieskroon, Namaqualand, Northern Cape.

The rigorous climate has created a myriad of life forms superbly adapted to their specific habitat. Fields of flowers, star-studded nights, quiver trees, enormous granite outcrops and the icy Atlantic are a few of the wonders that await visitors to this the “creator’s playground”. South African National Parks is currently developing Parks to protect the fragile ecosystem. The main focus areas for the new park include:

•    The area around the Skilpad Wildflower Reserve, which is a well-known tourist destination during the spring flowering season, and
•    The area between the Groen and Spoeg Rivers, that will allow for the protection of Marine Eco-systems as well as the associated estuaries.

Namaqualand is renowned for its annual mass display of wild flowers as well as its rich diversity of succulent plants, with an estimated 3500 species, more than 1000 or which are endemic to the region. Amphibians and reptiles are well represented, with a number of endemic species. Mammal species include klipspringer, aardvark (ant bear), steenbok, duiker, porcupine, black-backed jackal and leopard. Turn west at Kamieskroon on the N7 south of Springbok. It is 22-km from Kamieskroon to the Reserve and Park Offices.

The Reserve is open during the spring flower season from 08h00 to 17h00.  The flowers are at their best between 10h30 and 16h00. A fee of R5.00 is payable at the start of the 5 km circular drive.

Since this is a developing park, there are no overnight or camping facilities. Accommodation is however available at various establishments in the region. A farm stall on the adjacent farm serves light meals, refreshments and sells souvenirs.

The following activities are planned:

•    Circular drive with viewpoints during the spring flowering season
•    Several short nature trails
•    Picnic sites, and
•    A visitor information centre.

Note that pets are not allowed in the Park. It is an offence to pick flowers or remove plants or any other material from the Park. There are limited toilet facilities in the Park. Vehicle repairs, post office and police services are available in Kamieskroon. Medical services are available in Springbok, 67-km away. Enquiries about this developing park and the Skilpad Flower Reserve should be made to +27 (27) 672 1948 telephone. In case of  an emergency, the Park Number is +27 (27) 672 1948.
