Fruit of the Vine

Durbanville Wine Route, Winelands, Western Cape.

For over three centuries the Durbanville area and the surrounding Tygerberg Hills has earned its reputation as a producer of quality fresh produce. Originally for supplying the Dutch East India ships and, more recently, for the character and stature of the wine grapes grown here – evident in the class wines of the area and the demand for these grapes from other top cellars in the country.  The Durbanville Wine area, just 20 km from Cape Town, is one of the coolest wine-growing areas in the country…an important reason why it is recognised as a top region for wine grape production. Also a wide selection of slope aspects allows for optimum matching of cultivar with terrain. The rich red soils are predominantly of the Hutton and Clovelly type. Deep, cool and well-drained but with good water retention. This plus the heavy localised dews means vineyards can be cultivated without irrigation, even though the annual rainfall is only 500 mm. A variety of wines are offered – from all the red and white noble cultivars to the well loved individual cellar blends. The area has long been acclaimed for the herbaceous and full berry flavours of its well-known red wines. Now the white cultivars, especially the fruity and complex Sauvignon Blanca wines have also begun to win awards. All 5 cellars in the Durbanville area – Altydgedacht, Diemersal, Bloemendal, Meerendal and Nitida recently won gold medals – bearing witness to the quality of Durbanville wines.

Durbanville is on the N1 northeast of Cape Town.     ATDurban
