Fruit of the Vine

ID #5179

La Motte Wine Estate, Franschhoek, Winelands, Western Cape, South Africa.

Its history spans several centuries, back to the arrival of Dutch settlers in the middle of the 17th century. The farm received its name when French Hugenot Pierre Joubert named it after the village of his birth, La Motte d’Aigues. Viticulture was first established by Gabriel du Toit, who planted 400o vines in 1752. In the decades that followed, the farm saw a succession of owners, among them Cecil John Rhodes. It was acquired by Dr Anton Rupert in 1970, who set about establishing it as a world-class wine producing enterprise. His passion for winemaking and social upliftment has passed to his daughter Hanneli Koegelenberg and her husband Hein, who is currently CEO of La Motte. It has been at the forefront of social upliftment of farm workers in South Africa.

The unique charm of La Motte's 75-Ha of vineyards comes from the character of the wines that result from particular soil types and a moderate climate. State of the art practices are employed in management of the vineyards, which includes satellite monitoring and infrared scanning of the vines. In La Motte’s Nabot farm in the Walker Bay region, certified organic farming is précised, eliminating the use of insecticides and chemicals. These grapes are used in La Motte’s organic wines. Winemaker Edmund Terblanche also obtains grapes from family-owned vineyards in various regions. This adds versatility to the grapes supplied to La Motte’s cellar, where traditional methods are combined with modern science to produce wines known for their consistency and excellence. Since 2004 La Motte ventured into two additional enterprises, namely flower cultivation as well as the production of ethereal oils.

In addition, classical concerts by renowned international and local musicians are held on a monthly basis.
