Tussen-die-Riviere Nature Reserve, Bethulie, Southern Free State.
Between the Caledon and Orange Rivers. The plains are home to large herds of blesbok, black wildebeest and springbok. Other species include eland, grey rhebok, gemsbok, reedbuck, impala, kudu, red hartebeest and zebra, while buffalo shelter along the bushy riverbanks. Birds include fish and black eagles, while secretary birds stalk the grasslands. Warthog were recently reintroduced. Smaller nocturnal mammals include porcupine, aardvark (ant bear), aardwolf and bat-eared fox. San (Bushmen, Bushman) and Cape vultures took refuge at Aasvoelkop in days gone by. Unfortunately, only their paintings and ledges whitewashed with droppings bear testimony to this earlier existence. Besembos, wild olive trees and bush guarri are scattered over the koppies. Cape and weeping willow trees, white stinkwood, star apple and suurtaaibos fringe the rivers.
