Appen, Swinburne, Drakensberg, Eastern Free State.

At the foot of an enormous rock outcrop three hours from Johannesburg. Quiet and peaceful with sweeping view over the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains and down into Kwa-Zulu Natal.  It is the ideal spot for hikers and mountain climbers. Accommodation varies from brand new bedrooms, comfortably furnished with bathroom en-suite for those seeking a bit of luxury to an original farmhouse shed with basic sleeping facilities for hikers or school groups with double bunk beds and a large old-fashioned Aga stove for chilly evenings. The original farmhouse is also available and consists of a pub, braai area, several bedrooms and a large adjoining hall which doubles up as dining room in wet weather. This venue is for those wishing for a reasonably priced self-catered weekend. Should a catered weekend be required, arrangements can be made. The climbing is spectacular and not for the faint hearted. Unlimited space for hiking. Spend the night in a cave for something different. Swinburne is on the N3 southeast of Harrismith, which is at the intersection of the N3 with the N5. AZAppen
