Manzini Lodge, Melmoth, Zululand, Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Melmoth was founded in 1888 as a “gold rush” town. It is situated on a farm donated by Reinhold Ortlepp, and is named after Sir Melmoth Osborn, resident Commissioner of Zululand at the time. The climate and facilities make it an attractive residential area for those working in nearby Ulundi.  Apart from light industry, the economy of the town is primarily dependent on agriculture, including sugar, timber and cattle.  Citrus and avocado pears play a significant role, with both local and international markets.

Lakeside log cabin for birding, fishing and restoring the soul. On the farm Manzini outside of Melmoth. Self-catering lodge sleeps six in three bedrooms. Well-equipped kitchen. Melmoth has one of the largest and most dynamic conservancies in Kwa-Zulu Natal. 85000-Ha in area, it won the Natal Parks Board (now the Kwa-Zulu Natal Department of Conservation Services) Conservation Award and was placed in the top three in the South African National Conservation Awards.  Flora and fauna are flourishing as they are introduced, and include wildlife such as zebra, springbok and blesbok.  Melmoth was declared a bird sanctuary many years ago and is now an integral part of the Zululand Birding Route.

Other attractions in the area include the Ntingwe Tea Estates at Nkandla, Piet Retief’s grave at Mgungundlovu (Gingindlovu), the Umfolozi/Hluhluwe Game Reserve and the Battlefields Route.

Melmoth is on the R66 north of Nkwalini, which is on the R34 northwest of Empangeni, which is on the N2 north of Durban, which is at the intersection of the N2 with the N3. Manzini Lodge is 5-km south of Melmoth, close to the intersection with the P508 that leads towards KwaMaqwaza. BAManzini
