Meiringskloof Nature Park, Fouriesburg, Eastern Free State.

In a beautiful kloof with a variety of birds, indigenous bush, sandstone cliffs and caves. Accommodation is available in fully equipped chalets or at grassy caravan sites, all of which have electrical outlets.  Ample shade, a lovely garden, a modern ablution block built from sandstone, a swimming pool and a small tuck shop. Scenic walks to various points of interest:

•    Holkrans, a large open cave used as a hideout during the Anglo-Boer War
•    Bushman (Bushmen, San ) rock art
•    Beautiful view of the Maluti Mountains in Lesotho
•    Chain Ladder: Up the cliffs to the dam that supplies water to the town.  Largemouth bass can be seen in the dam but are too clever to be caught!
•    Ridge Route: Seven-hour hike through tunnels formed by the overhanging rock and along mountain ridges.

Only a limited number of caravan sites have been developed and the number of day visitors is controlled to preserve the natural surroundings.  Advisable to book in advance, especially during peak periods. Close to Golden Gate (51-km), Clarens (35-km), Lesotho (9-km) and Bethlehem (48-km).

Fouriesburg is on the R26 south of Bethlehem, which is on the N5 west of Harrismith, which is at the intersection of the N3 with the N5. Close to the Lesotho Border post at Caledonspoort. AUMeirings
