Spend a Night in Jail, Philippolis, Southern Free State.

The jail was built in 1872 in Philippolis, the oldest “nedersetting” (1823) in the Free State.  It has been left as close as possible to its original state. Experience what a prisoner must have felt like, locked up in one of the cells. However, we have of course added all the modern conveniences to which one has become accustomed. Accommodation in individual 2-mx3-m cells with 24-inch outer walls and 18-inch inner walls – cool in summer and warm in winter.  Heavy wood and steel doors.  Two single beds per cell and a floor mat. Self-catering braai packs are available as well as wood and charcoal. Braai facilities supplied. Kitchen with fridge and stove at the disposal of the “prisoners”.  Basic utensils are available but you must bring your own supplies. Hiking trail through the town. Canoe trips on the Orange River by prior arrangement. Riverboat cruises on the Orange River. Biggest saddle horse show in the Platteland (rural districts) in November.  Witblits (moonshine) festival in April.  Hunting, theme museum. Close to the Gariep and van der Kloof dams. Excellent fishing. Ideal stopover between Cape Town and the Reef.

Philippolis is on the R717 north of Colesberg, which is at the intersection of the N1 with the N9. Exit the N1 at Colesburg if travelling north and at Trompsburg if travelling south. AVSpend
