Black Eagle Farm Route, Steytlerville, Karoo, Eastern Cape.

Farms surrounding the pleasant Karoo town of Steytlerville.  If you are looking for “a road less travelled” this is it! Early pioneers and hunters who came up from the Cape in their wagons frequented this historical region, which forms the southern reaches of the Plains of Camdeboo.   They came in search of a new life and “white gold” – ivory.  They established farms in the valley flanked by the Baviaans and Grootrivier Hoogte that you can visit today. The climate is typically Karoo – dry and healthy with hot days and cold nights. Activities include bird watching, game drivers, and overnight camps. Explore age-old Bushman (Bushmen) paintings, scenic walks, horse riding and mountain bike routes.  Farms include:

o    Boschfontein:  In the foothills of the Baviaans Mountains with a panoramic view of the Steytlerville Basin and the distant Grootrivier Hoogte. Accommodation in a 19th century farmstead with lounge/dining room, three bedrooms and a bathroom. Meals from the homestead can be arranged. Scenic walks, hiking, mountain bike trails, day and night game viewing, birding and Bushman (Bushmen) paintings. Visit the old 18th century farmhouse. o    Bucklands: At the head of Grootrivierspoort.  Unforgettable trails and walks down the “poort” amongst yellowwoods, cycads, swimming holes and picnic spots. o    Eliezer:  Relive good old times around the big kitchen table and warm cosy fire.  Accommodation for four in the main house on a bed and breakfast basis. Alternatively, 6-8 in a self-contained unit, with additional meals or a spit braai available on request.  Big dam for swimming, scenic walks and trails abundant bird life.  Target shooting, horse riding and motorcycling on request. o    Hadley:  Mountains, ravines and the Grootrivierspoort are ideal for hikers, mountain climbers and nature lovers.  Fully equipped self-catering accommodation in the farmhouse. o    Narrasnek: In the mountains just off the Jansenville road. Comfortable farmhouse accommodates six and is fully equipped. Steytlerville is on the R329 east of Willowmore, which is on the N9 northeast of its intersection with the N12, which is on the N12 north of George, which is at the intersection of the N2 with the N12. George is at the intersection of the N2 with the N12. The farms are on the R329 between Willowmore and Uitenhage, via Steytlerville, Baroe and Wolwefontein. BDBlack
