Green Lantern Inn, Van Reenen’s Pass, Drakensberg, Eastern Free State.

Established in 1892 and commandeered by the British as a headquarters during the Anglo-Boer War, it is an ideal stopover between Durban and Johannesburg.  Accommodation for 40. Activities include darts, table tennis, snooker, DSTV and swimming pool. Close to trout and bass fishing, golf, hiking, horse riding, birding, mountain biking (cycling) and 4x4 trails. Historic “Little Church” is within walking distance. An interesting feature is the main lounge with its beautiful Oregon pine dance floor. It was originally the projection room, and silent movies were shown here in the 1930’s. Many battlefields, including Spioenkop, are nearby.  Cater for wedding receptions, conferences and get togethers. Wholesome meals in our a la carte restaurant or “Halfway Noggin Pub”. Sponsors of the Green lantern Inn Road Race, which is held annually on the last Saturday of October.

Van Reenen is on the N3 southeast of Harrismith, which is at the intersection of the N3 with the N5. Close to the Kwa-Zulu Natal border. Turn off the N3 at the Caltex Star Stop in Van Reenen’s Pass.
