Flyfishing East Griqualand Style, Southern Drakensberg, Southern Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Apart from dams controlled by the Matatiele and Hopewell Flyfishing Clubs, private landowners have recognised what they have to offer and began to develop their dams with accommodation on or near the waters over the previous few years. Flyfishing in the rivers is usually best in winter, as violent summer storms often muddy the waters.

Near to Swartberg are the following destinations - all with accommodation close by. Curragh Lake, with fishing in the lake. Ndwane River has four fishing cabins that accommodate ten in each. eMoyeni, on the 20 hectare Belmont Dam, with a wooden cabin right on the banks, can accommodate six.  Fearnely Farm offers you the choice two dams and a cottage that can take 5 people, while St. Bernards Mountain Lodge, a rural rustic hotel at the foot of the Drakensberg, has a small dam. Stubb's Stable is on the way to St. Bernards. A recently renovated cut-stone building, with fishing in a tributary of the Umzimvubu River, it is able to take 10 persons.

Once you have tired of these waters, head for Cedarville. Try Die Kroon's at the foot of the Bokkiesberg and Die Hoek Trout Cabin, built right over the waters of a small dam. Opened at the beginning of the year, it has proved an instant success. Robert Rawlins will arrange for you to fish the Matatiele Mountain Lake. The lake also now offers self-catered accommodation on its banks.

All the above are self catered units except St. Bernards which offers you a choice of catered, self-catered, camping and caravan opportunities.

There are other destinations that will come onto the market in the near future. The dams are already stocked with trout. All that is needed is time for them to grow and for the owners to finish construction of the accommodation!

Swartberg is on the R617 north of Kokstad, which is on the N2 northwest of Port Shepstone, which is on N2 south of  Durban, which is at the intersection of the N2 with the N3. Travel north on the R617 from Kokstad to Swartberg. Alternatively travel south on the R617 from Underberg. BJFly
