Three Sisters Horse Trails, Riet River, Port Alfred (Portalfred), Sunshine Coast, Eastern Cape.

Scenic horse rides through the Tharfield Nature Reserve (1.5 hours). See bushbuck, duiker, Fish eagle, etc. The trail takes a circular route through the bush following the banks of the Riet River.  Ride along the shoreline past towering sand dunes and deep pools surrounding Three Sisters Rocks – the feeding grounds of the orange-beaked oystercatcher, flocks of sandpipers plus many others. Whales are sometimes spotted during their annual migration, and schools of dolphin are often seen playing in the surf.  The trail turns inland over the dunes at Kleinemonde River into the Tharfield Nature Reserve. You may catch a glimpse of bushbuck and duiker.  Vervet monkeys play in the coastal forest, which is also the home of bushpig, caracal, jackal, porcupine, hares, tortoise and wild cat

Strandloper shell middens can be seen on the hillsides near the Three Sisters. Shipwrecks were common, and three unlucky members of the Kilbrennan who were washed onto the rocks on March 28 1907 are buried nearby.  The remains of the wreck itself can still be seen behind the Second Sister.

The trail attracts both confident riders who can enjoy an exhilarating canter in the surf as well as inexperienced riders who prefer a quiet stroll along the shoreline and through the green reserve. A shorter, easier trail is available for children and nervous riders.

Booking is essential. It is best to wear long pants with low-heeled shoes. Trainers/takkies are fine. Groups of 1-7 riders. Self-catering farm cottage sleeps four.

Riet River is on the R72 east of Port Alfred, which is on the R72 west of East London, which is at the intersection of the N2 with the N6. Travel east on the R72 from Port Alfred. Turn right at the sign “Three Sisters Horse Trails” 14.5-km east of Port Alfred and park in the lay-by. BJThree
