Mawana Horse Safaris, Mawana Nature Reserve, Francistown, Eastern Botswana, Southern Africa.

Mawana Nature Reserve in on the banks of the Limpopo River in the Tuli Block, Eastern Botswana. Horse trails cover riverine terrain, mopane bushveld and the famous granite rock formations of the Tuli as well as many ancient baobabs. Birding paradise, with breeding pairs of Pell’s fishing owl, raptors and other species. 250 species have been spotted in a single day! Game is abundant, with large elephant herds as well as very large crocodiles and hippo. Leopard, lion and hyena (hyaena) are often sighted.

Koro Tented Camp is the horse safari base camp.  Luxury tented camp on the banks of the Limpopo underneath a Scotia Tree.  Each tent sleeps two and has an adjacent flush toilet and hot shower. Rustic lapa and bar as well as a splash pool. Two wilderness camps; Kwena and Shatu. Lay your mattress and sleeping bag around a campfire out under the stars. There is a covered communal living area for the not so adventurous.

It is recommended that one stay for a minimum of three nights, with an 8-day safari being the speciality. For those who would prefer guided game walks and drives, try Malope Lodge and Mokowe Tented Camp instead.

o    Tuli Block Horse Safari: one of the last great African adventures. It lasts approximately nine nights and covers 250-km in the Tuli Block.  Accommodation alternates between luxurious tented and wilderness camps without compromising on the quality of food and amenities.
o    Limpopo Valley Horse Safari: A wonderful game viewing opportunity on the Mashatu Game Reserve.  Three and five night itineraries including overnight stops in the tented camps and wilderness fly camps.  Game drives and viewing in addition to horse riding.

Horses have been selected for their temperament and rideability. They have been selected from various South African breeds that are known for their toughness and ability to cope with extreme conditions.  Breeds include Boerperd, the Basuto and the SA Warmblood.  They range in size from 14.4 to 16.2 hands.
