Whistle and Trout and Tickled Trout, Waterval Boven, Escarpment, Mpumalanga.

o    Ride a Steam Train: Paul Kruger was born in the Cape Colony in 1825 and took part in the Great Trek between 1836 and 1838.  He was elected president of the ZAR in 1883 and served four consecutive terms until his self-imposed exile in Clarens, Switzerland, where he died in 1904. Intimately connected with him is the history of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorweg Maatsschappij (NZASM). With the opening of the Delagoa Bay-Pretoria Line in 1895 one of his greatest ideals was realised – i.e., access to a coastal port that did not pass through British territory. The NZASM tunnel was considered a magnificent feat of engineering at the time. The stone with which the tunnel is lined was cut in Italy and merely placed in position here.  The rack railway remained in use until 1908. Board the Oosterlijn Express steam train at the Whistle and Trout in Waterval Boven and relive the excitement of steam travel on the return trip to the Tickled Trout in Waterval Onder. The train departs from the Whistle and Trout at 11h00 every Sunday and returns at 13h30.

o    Whistle and Trout (circa 1894): Restaurant, pub and railway museum. Log fires in winter. First Avenue, Waterval Boven (opposite the Station).  Open from 7h30 until late.

o    Tickled Trout (circa 1894): Restaurant in an historic stone building, formerly a trading post on the Delagoa Bay /Pretoria route. On the N4 opposite Krugerhof (circa 1894), the last residence of President Paul Kruger before he left the ZAR (Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek) for exile in Europe in 1900. Hearty breakfasts, lunches and teas. Gardens in the scenic Elands River Valley. Fully licensed. Open from 09h00 to 17h00.
