Cucumber Juice for Breakfast, Alan McIver.
The French always seem able to surprise me. They have a flair for doing things slightly differently. I became conscious of this once again when I stayed in a French hotel on the Corniche in Abu Dhabi recently. As expected the food – especially the pastry – was a highlight of my stay. But at breakfast one morning I noticed that the many fresh juices available included one I had never seen before – cucumber juice. So I decided to try it instead of the usual orange, apple, grapefruit or mango juice.
Being dark green, it is not very appetizing -- looking. But my surprise was complete – it is quite different from the fresh fruit juices I have tasted before. The mainstay of the juice is cucumber to which is added just enough apple juice and mint to give it a whiff of those two distinctive tastes. Served cold, it was both delicious as well as refreshing. And, I suspect, healthy as well because it contains very little sugar.
If you would like to surprise yourself or your guests, try making some cucumber juice for breakfast. Hopefully you too will also be able to surprise them.
