Shopping at Supermarkets in South Africa.

There are four large supermarket chains in South Africa, namely

o Pick n Pay
o Shoprite/Checkers
o Woolworths, and
o Spar

Pick n Pay and Checkers are recognized for both price and quality. Woolworths is renowned for superb quality – particularly insofar as perishable food such as free-range eggs and meat, fruit and vegetables, salads, etc is concerned -- while Spar is best known as a convenience store. Sizes range from large hypermarkets to small retail outlets. These days many have in-house bakeries. Woolworths also have in-house restaurants in the larger stores. They are represented in all the large metropolitan areas as well as in most “dorps” in the “platteland”. Pick n Pay and Woolworths both offer an online shopping and home delivery service in metropolitan areas. These days the stereotypical Greek Café is long gone, having been replaced by convenience shops in many petrol stations. Bear in mind that such services are not necessarily available in remote or rural areas.
