Waterval Boven Trout Association, Escarpment, Mpumalanga.

Waterval Boven owes its existence to the railway line that was built between Lourenco Marques (Maputo) and Pretoria 1n 1894. Paul Kruger lived here at the end of his term as President of the Transvaal Republic.  His house, proclaimed a national monument, can be seen in Waterval Onder. Legend has it that the “Kruger Millions” are buried in the area. Winston Churchill spent an uncomfortable night here in hiding after a daring escape during the Anglo-Boer War.

It lies in one of the best fly-fishing areas of the country, with Machadodorp, Belfast, Dullstroom and Lydenburg nearby. The association boasts three well-stocked dams and nine-km of excellent fishing in the Elands River.  The dams are stocked with rainbow, brown and golden trout. Breeding takes place in the river during the winter months. Some sections of the river contain wild trout only.  Activities in the area include hiking trails, steam train rides from Waterval Boven to Waterval Onder, historic monuments, birding, paragliding and rock climbing.  Tourist attractions in the area include the Kruger National Park, the Sudwala Caves, the Dinosaur Park, and Maputo across the border in Mozambique.

Waterval Boven is on the N4 east of Middelburg, which is at the intersection of the N4 with the N11. AYWaterval.
