Die Hantam Huis, Calvinia, Hantam Karoo, Northern Cape.
The owner of Hoogekraal, Field-cornet A van Wyk, built Hantam Huis in 1854 as his town house after having sold a section of his farm to wardens of the Dutch Reformed Church. The house is built in a Cape Dutch style with a gable at the back. It has steep end and front gables with half-moon shaped pediments on the spires. The cedar woodwork used throughout the house is original. Windows are in Cape Dutch style with the original glass. The Hantam fresco painter A F Bus probably painted the dados and frescoes. It has recently been restored. The original kraal houses a coffee shop where traditional Hantam delicacies are served and handicrafts sold during the flower season. Hours Monday to Friday 09h00 to 17h00. Saturdays 09h00 to 13h00. Closed Tuesdays out of season.
