Carlos da Souza Decopeur Extraordinaire, Aberdeen, Karoo, Eastern Cape.
Carlos and three proteges – Raymond, Moses and Mecutio -- produce beautiful ostrich eggs in the tiny Karoo village of Aberdeen.
He escaped from the corporate world in 1992 and lived in Graaff-Reinet for a while, after which he moved to the even smaller village of Aberdeen, where he is steadily transforming a stately old house into something quite special. Red and green walls, yellow window frames, blue pillars – flamboyant but well chosen to complement the antique furniture and décor. The garden is not your typical “Karoo tuintjie” either. Lush plants are laid out perfectly. Spectacular surroundings in which to be creative.
The real creativity behind this friendly, generous character becomes apparent when you step into the decoupage studio at the end of the garden. Each egg is painstakingly finished to a lustre and translucence that puts his work into a category of its own. Examples can be seen in the Drosty Hotel in Graaff-Reinet.
Aberdeen is on the N9 east of Beaufort West, which is at the intersection of the N1 with the N12. BLCarlos
