Premier Diamond Mine, Cullinan, Northeastern Gauteng.

One of the most famous diamond mines in the world is outside Pretoria. Moreover, the fact that it is famous is proof that size does count when talking about diamonds. Most of the world’s large diamonds come from this mine. The Cullinan Diamond, named after the founder of the mine, was found in 1905 and weighed 3106 carats in the rough – the largest diamond ever discovered.  The mine is open to visitors and the town consists of attractively renovated stone miners cottages designed by Sir Herbert Baker. The village is developing into a tourism centre with guesthouses, curio shops, restaurants and a manufacturing jeweller. Underground tours on the fourth Friday of each month. Four hours. Departures 07h45 for 08h00. Surface Tours: 2 hours. Caves and underground lake at Little Eden nearby. Restaurants, candle factory, winery, leather goods and curio shop. Open air museum of underground machinery.

#99 Oak Avenue, Cullinan, which is on the R515 east of Pretoria. Travel east on the N4 from Pretoria. Take the Rayton/Cullinan exit (exit # 27). Turn north and travel for approximately 20-km north on R515. Pass through Rayton as well as Sonderwater (Without Water) Prison. ADPremier
