Akkerendam Nature Reserve and Hiking Trails, Calvinia, Hantam Karoo, Northern Cape.

Dominated by majestic Hantam Mountain, the reserve is a mesa surrounded by buttes. Hiking is an excellent way of exploring the unspoilt nature. There are two trails in the reserve. Special care has been taken to provide for the needs of senior citizens on the Kareeboom Route. The 2-km trail crosses the slopes of Hantam Mountain and takes about 2 hours to complete. The Sterboom Route, along the eastern slopes of the mountain, crosses the precipice to the plateau. It takes about 6-7 hours to complete. Mass displays of flowers do not occur in the reserve, but most of the species are present in smaller colonies. The reserve is also a proclaimed bird sanctuary. The Karee Dam provides an oasis for migrating birds. 65 different species can be seen.

The reserve is north of Calvinia, which is on the R27 east of Vanrhynsdorp, which is on the N7 north of Cape Town. Travel east from Vanrhynsdorp on the R27 via Nieuwoudtville to Calvinia. AIAkker
