Hiking, Trails and Routes
ID #1088
Sentinel Peak Hiking Trail, Phuthatijaba, Eastern Free State.
Where Lesotho, the Mountain Kingdom, joins Qwa-Qwa and the Royal Natal National Park. Flowers such as agapanthus and Protea nubigena (a small pink flower found only on the slopes of the Sentinel) make the hike a floral adventure. The trail is famous for its chain ladder. Those that have braved this renowned obstacle will tell you that even the most experienced hikers enjoy the view from the top of the Amphitheatre onto the valley and plains below. Camping on the plateau is permitted. Fresh drinking water is available from the source of the Tugela River. Primitive toilet facilities are available. Hike to the summit of Mont aux Sources, the highest point in South Africa (not in Southern Africa, which is at Thabana Ntlenyana further south). Drive up the mountain from the Phutaditjhaba –Witsieshoek road, which is 7-km from the turnoff to the Witsieshoek Mountain Resort. Obtain a permit at the car park. Features include:
• Camping on the plateau
• Hiker’s hut at Witsieshoek Mountain Resort
The weather at the summit of the Drakensberg can change rapidly. Strong winds often buffet these peaks. Fog can occur in both summer and winter. Winters are cold with occasional snowfalls. Summers are hot but evenings can be cold. Hikers must be prepared for extreme cold.
Witsieshoek is on the R57 south of Kestell, which is on the N5 east of Bethlehem, which is on the N5 west of Harrismith, which is at the intersection of the N3 with the N5. AASent
