Doornkloof, Irene, Centurion, Northern Gauteng.

Once a prefabricated officer’s mess in Middelburg hastily constructed by the British Army, this gabled house with its wooden verandahs and lacy fretwork was bought by General JC Smuts in 1909 and moved to his farm Doornkloof near Pretoria. There are no flowers in the garden – he wanted the veld to come right up to the front door. The ascetic quality of his personality is readily appreciated. Spend some time in the “Place of Silence” – it is thought provoking. Pay careful attention to the construction of the braai area. He had obviously spent a lot of time in the veld. An interesting personality that is reflected in the house. Irene is on the N1 north of Midrand and south of Pretoria. AGDoornkloof
