ID #2068

Tswaing Crater Museum, Pretoria, Northern Gauteng.

The crater is filled with a saline lake – hence the name, which means place of salt in Tswana. It was formed as the result of a meteorite impact some 200,000 years ago – i.e. quite recently by geological standards.  It was later a Stone Age site where a salt extraction factory was built. It is now an eco-museum.
