Transvaal Museum Bird Department, Pretoria, Northern Gauteng.

The largest museum-based ornithological facility in South Africa. It houses the second largest ornithological collection in South Africa. It played an important part in the history of ornithology as Dr Austin Roberts, author of the first authoritative text on southern African birds, was curator for many years. The functions of the department are to conduct research on birds with emphasis on collection-based research and taxonomy, and to provide support on bird-related issues and education of the public.
