South African Jewish Museum, Cape Town, South Africa.

A journey to a half a world away transformed their lives and reaffirmed their spirit. Explore the old world that the Jewish pioneers left behind and recognize the new one that they discovered. Find out how they embarked on unknown territory and charted a course for others to follow. In dorps and towns, on farms and in hotels. In retail, mining, industry and technology.

Discover the people who paved the way. Witness their transformation from tailors to tycoons. From peddlers to professors. From carpenters to cricketers. Form innkeepers to IT wizards. Helen Suzman, champion for social justice. Barney Barnato, entrepreneur extraordinaire. Nadine Gordimer, Nobel Laureate for literature. Phillip Tobias, groundbreaker in human evolution. Anthony Sher, acting luminary.  Issie Maisels, defender of the oppressed. William Kentridge, master of film and canvas. Marvel at their ingenuity and recognize their pioneering spirit. Building a new heritage at home and abroad. Making an impact on the world around them.

Open the door to a unique museum experience. Touch screens and interactive computers side by side with a peddler’s cart. Documentary film and newsreel footage alongside a 19th Century Lithuanian village. Family trees reveal lost generations. International exhibitions reflect local masterworks.  Interviews show Nelson Mandela as the icon of hope for all South Africa. Open Sunday through Thursday from 10h00 to 17h00, Fridays from 10h00 to 14h00. Specialized guided tours available on request. Museum parking at C.T.H.S.
