ID #5278

Cape Town Holocaust Centre, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa.

The Holocaust Centre is the first and only such centre in Africa. It is a place of remembrance for the 6 million Jews who were killed in the Holocaust and all other victims of Nazism, and the tragic consequences of unchecked racial discrimination and xenophobia.

Racial discrimination and religious intolerance have resulted in untold suffering, persecution and mass death. While discrimination does not always lead to genocide, it invariably precedes it and in the 20th Century alone genocides have claimed millions of victims.  Nazism was driven by a racist ideology obsessed with the belief in the purity of a superior Aryan race. Six million Jewish men, women and children in Nazi-occupied Europe were murdered, not because of their beliefs or opinions, not because of anything they had done, but simply because they were Jews.

The exhibition comprises:

o Text and photo panels
o Archival documents and film footage
o Multimedia displays
o Artifacts
o Recreated environments
o South African context and aspects

Visitors comments as follows:

o Comparable with the finest Holocaust museums elsewhere
o Brilliantly and movingly put together – a worthy tribute to the human spirit
o Sobering journey into the past – may we learn from the past

Opening Hours: Sundays through Thursdays 10h00-17h00, Fridays 10h00-13h00, Closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays. Entrance is free.

On the First floor of the Albow Centre, 88 Hatfield Street, Cape Town. Conveniently situated for visitors in the midst of Cape Town’s “museum mile”, the centre is close to the SA National Gallery, the SA Museum, SA Library and the SA Jewish Museum.
