Karoo National Botanical Garden, Worcester, Winelands, Western Cape.

The only true succulent garden in the Southern Hemisphere. Thousands of annuals and brightly coloured vygies come into flower in spring.  The spectacle lasts from mid-August to the end of September. Falling within the succulent Karoo biome, which includes the Namaqualand flora so famous for its spring flowers, the garden boasts some 400 naturally occurring species.  It is also a haven for many rare and endangered plants, with over 300 species being protected and propagated. Over 70 bird species have been spotted as well as a range of mammals such as Cape grey duiker.  Approximately 11-Ha are cultivated, whilst the remaining 144 are kept as a flora reserve with several km of trails. Special features include:

•    Khoisan kookskerm. An ethnobotanical garden displaying plants used by the people of Namaqualand.
•    Organised tours. Tours of the succulent collections are available by prior arrangement (14 per group).  The tours include slide shows and a tour of the maze.
•    Plant Maze. Porkwood plant maze
•    Plant Sales. Well-stocked nursery with over 500 and the seed of a further 200 indigenous species.
•    Shop. Botanical books, seed and curios.
•    Braille Trail. 1-km with information boards in braille.
•    Karoo Trail. Illustrates the fascinating regions of the Karoo, including the Little, Great and Hantam Karoo.
•    Shale Trail. 1.7-km in the natural karroid koppies and illustrated with information boards.
