Lowveld National Botanical Garden, Nelspruit, Lowveld, Eastern Mpumalanga.

A beautiful site in the heart of Mpumalanga. It straddles the Crocodile River where it has cut down into the bedrock to form a narrow gorge. It joins the Nels River in the garden and they tumble over a spectacular waterfall, forming a dramatic setting for the developed part of the garden. In addition to the 600 species of trees that occur naturally, a further 2000 species have been introduced. Over 650 of South Africa’s 1000 tree species are cultivated in the developed part of the garden. Features include:

•    Tropical African Rain Forest. A unique collection of plants representative of the rapidly disappearing tropical forests of Central and West Africa. A complete eco-system has been created, from the high forest canopy to the thick layer of herbaceous plants on the moist forest floor.
•    South African Forest. A cooler forest type representative of the forests along the eastern mountains and the coastal belt from Cape Town to the Limpopo River. This is the best collection in the country.
•    Cycads. The largest collection of African cycads in the world, including all the South African cycads.
•    Cascades Café. Serves teas, sandwiches and light meals and is open 7 days a week from 08h00 to 17h00. Buffet lunch is served on Sundays. Contact +27 (13) 752 4201 telephone.
•    Lunch Hour Concerts. Held on Sundays during the winter months.

Open daily from 08h00 to 17h15 (May through September) and 08h00 through 18h00 (October through April).
