Information and history

ID #2349

Cycads, Ancient Plants, Southern Africa.

They have existed for between 200 and 300 million years. They existed before the evolution of flowering plants and belong in the same class as pine and fir trees. They were quite literally the food of the dinosaurs. Often called the bread tree, they were eaten by African people in times of scarcity. It is however the pith that is eaten, not the seed, which is poisonous. Today they are carefully protected as they are now endangered. Permits are required to purchase or transport these rare plants.
