North-West Province -- History and Features, South Africa.

There are three national monuments in the North-West Province: Cannon Koppie, Warren’s Fort in Mafikeng and David Livingstone’s Mabotsa Mission at Gopane in Lehurutshe. Other notable features include:

o    “Maratiwa”, the house built by Silas Molema (the founder of Mafikeng) who also built the first school in the area in 1878. It was occupied by Sol Plaatjie, a writer, journalist, politician and first Secretary-General of the ANC.
o    “Seweding”, the piece of land on which Sol Plaatjie lived, comprises the remains of his house, well, kraal and pepper trees planted by him.
o    Mafikeng Methodist Church: It was built in 1885 in the original tribal town of Mafikeng by General Sir Charles Warren’s military expedition.
o    Kgotla of the Barolong Boo Ratshidi: It contains a monument to the Barolong who died in action during the Siege of Mafikeng in the Anglo-Boer War.
o    Ikalafeng Monument: Built in 1876 by the Bahurutshe of Chief Ikalafeng on the orders of General Pretorius to symbolise peace.
o    Dinokana Church: An old Lutheran Church built around 1890, with an interesting interior. It has a brass candelabra, altar painting, ornately carved wooden pulpit and canopy. Outside is a small bell tower. The bell was made in Germany in 1885 and is inscribed in Setswana and German.
o    Dinokana Springs: The springs are an interesting and attractive geological feature.
o    Wondergat: A well-known dolomitic sinkhole, which is one of the deepest in the world, is used by scuba diving clubs.
o    Kraaipan: Kraaipan is the site of the first engagement of the South African War. On October 12 1899, General de la Rey’s commando ambushed a British train. The monument is near the railway crossing.
o    Bosman’s School: A school in which the writer, Herman Charles Bosman, taught was built near Abjaterskop in the 1920’s.
o    Derdepoort: A limestone cave that is largely unexplored.
o    Jacobsdal: An Iron Age settlement excavated near Mosega. AKNorthwest
