Information on the Limpopo Province, South Africa.

This land of legend, ruins, and relics abounds in ancient forests, sparkling trout waters, hot mineral springs and waterfalls.  Much of it has remained unchanged for centuries, offering opportunities for the enjoyment of untamed Africa.  The northern section of the Kruger National Park is renowned for its large herds of elephant and buffalo, tsessebe, sable and rich bird life. Excellent privately owned game reserves on its western border offer luxurious air-conditioned accommodation and day and night game viewing in open 4x4 vehicles.  The mountainous Waterberg (Water Mountain) is also home to numerous game reserves. The Soutpansberg (Salt Pan Mountain) in the far north should be explored at leisure on one of the hiking trails. Beyond the mountains, mopane trees and giant baobabs dominate plains that sweep towards the Limpopo River and Zimbabwe. Many natural heritage sites are accessible by visitors.

The Venda who inhabit the Eastern Soutpansberg are believed to be descended from chiefs who traveled south from Central Africa towards the end of the 17th century.  Intensely superstitious, they place great store on rites and rituals.  In the python dance, bare-breasted teenage girls perform a slow, rhythmic dance to the throb of tribal drums.  The drum is central to traditional Venda religious beliefs.

Scattered throughout the Limpopo Province, the North Sotho live in small settlements with family homesteads clustered around their kraals.  A member of the North Sotho, the hereditary Rain Queen, Modjadji, was the most famous rainmaker on the sub-continent, and believed by many to be immortal.

There are a small number of Tsonga in the province whose origins are obscure. In rural areas their life follows a leisurely pace with much time spent on arts and crafts. Unlike most other tribes, the Tsonga are keen fishermen. AONorpro
