History of Bethlehem, Eastern Free State.

The friendly heart of the Free State. Founded in 1864 on the farm Pretoriuskloof. The town’s proud history is reflected in the beautiful sandstone buildings that grace the streets.  Many are proclaimed national monuments and are still used today as churches and museums (e.g. the Baartman Wagon House and the Nazareth Mission Church) restaurants, coffee shops and businesses. Several scenic attractions, including:

•    Pretoriuskloof Nature Reserve in the centre of town has lovely pathways and picnic spots along the Jordaan River.
•    Loch Athlone Pleasure Resort with its landmark ocean liner restaurant offers watersports, camping, fishing, angling and holiday accommodation
•    Wolhuterskop Game Reserve has zebra, eland and red hartebeest. Enjoy game viewing and hiking.

It is surrounded by the scenery of the Eastern Free State. Enjoy day trips into the Maluti and Witteberg Mountains nearby. Bethlehem is on the N5 west of Harrismith, which is at the intersection of the N3 with the N5. AUHistory.
