Aha Hills and Drotsky’s Cave, Western Botswana, Southern Africa.

The Aha Hills are in an isolated, untouched wilderness area that straddles the western border with Namibia.  They form a 24500-Ha dolomite, limestone and marble plateau that is 700 million years old.  This is the most remote part of Botswana that accessible by vehicles.  Much of the area has not been fully explored or documented.  There is little animal life here and, in particular, relatively few birds. This results in almost total silence and the feeling that you are in the one of the most remote places on earth.   There are several large sinkholes in the area and visitors are advised to avoid such dangerous formations.

The Aha Hills are 150-km south of Tsodilo. There are two access routes. One turns west from the Maun/Shakawe road at Nokaneng while the other turns west at Tsau and follows the Gcwihaba Caverns (Drotsky’s Cave) route.

Drotsky’s Cave is in an area known as the Gcwihaba Hills. This beautiful cave is 50-km southeast of the Aha Hills in undulating Kalahari dunes.  There are two unspectacular low ridges of sand-covered rock at the entrance to the cave.  An enchanting curtain of stalactites is one of the many wonders inside this formation.  The large bat population is noisy but harmless.  The caves contain a maze of passages that lead to bizarre rock formations, flowstones of various beautiful and subtle colours, stalactites, inlets, hallways, apertures and frozen waterfalls.  All were formed by dripping water.  A number of new caverns have recently been discovered. A 4x4 is required to reach the area and visitors need to be completely self-sufficient as far as food, water, fuel and equipment is concerned.  BFAhahills
