Johannesburg Attractions, Gauteng, South Africa.

The following are some of the attractions Johannesburg has to offer:

•    Public Library. Houses the Michaelis Collection of books on architecture and fine art.
•    Transnet Heritage Library. In the old Johannesburg Railway Station. Displays show the development of transport in South Africa since 1860.
•    Johannesburg Art Gallery. Includes the Pim Collection of prints, etchings, engravings and woodcuts from the 15th century. Sculpture garden includes works by Maillol. Open 10h00 to 17h00 Tuesday through Sunday.
•    Market Theatre Complex. Three theatres in the old market in Bree Street. The old market atmosphere has been maintained. Guided group tours by appointment. Bookings phone +27 (11) 833 5624
•    Museum Africa. Paintings depicting South Africa’s indigenous races and a fine collection of musical instruments are on display in this museum on Bree Street. There are also displays of the history of Johannesburg. Open 09h00 to 17h00 Tuesdays to Sundays.
•    Oriental Plaza. Main Road, Fordsburg. Hundreds of shops, the main centre for Johannesburg’s Indian community, are situated in a complex that covers 16 city blocks.
•    Pioneer Park, Rosettenville Road, La Rochelle.  The James Hall Transport Museum depicts the history of transport in South Africa. The Model Steam Club meets on Sunday afternoons, when rides on miniature steam trains are offered.
•    University of the Witwatersrand, Jorrisen Street, Braamfontein. The largest University in Africa. A replica of Jan Smuts’ library with original books and furniture is housed in Jan Smuts House.
•    Planetarium, Yale Road, Braamfontein. Lectures lasting an hour are presented on Fridays at 20h00 and Saturdays at 15h00. Tickets available from Computicket: +27 (11) 716 3199.
•    Johannesburg Zoo. Hermann Eckstein Park, Jan Smuts Avenue. Open daily from 08h30 to 17h00.
•    South African Museum of Military History. On the eastern border of the Johannesburg Zoo. Open daily from 09h00 to 16h00.
•    Bensusan Museum of Photography. Newtown Cultural Precinct. Old cameras, photographic equipment and historical prints are on display. Open from 09h00 to 17h00 Tuesdays through Sundays.
•    Emmarentia Dam and Botanical Gardens. Emmarentia. Popular for picnics and windsurfing. There is a magnificent rose garden with 12000 rose trees.
•    Lipizzaner Stallions, Kyalami. The only such performances outside of Vienna. Performances on Sundays at 11h00. Closed during October. Bookings at Computicket.  AEJohannesburg
